As many electric arc furnaces utilize the foaming slag technique which protects the refractory lining, they also use oxygen and CH4 to accelerate the melting process and to reduce the electric consumption, so the refractory linings are exposed to extra erosion. In addition, the hot spots are often 100-150°C hotter than the steel itself. For the best lining solution, it is recommended to use MgO-C bricks based on fused magnesia with 10-15 %C in E.A.F. working linings.
